Veronica's standing at school, a student crashes into her. Her books fly out of her arms.
"Thanks, man," she comments.
Veronica is picking up her stuff, Duncan bends down to help. He is in robotoman mood, serious, expressionless and says nothing. Then he stands up and walks away with Logan.
Veronica voiceovers: The weird thing about going to high school with your ex is they're inescapable. Everywhere you turn, there they are.
The weird thing is, it's Logan who looks back at her as she stares after Duncan.
Then a bit later, Veronica suggests to Troy that they should go out. As they walk and talk, Duncan and Logan are also walking and talking a little way behind them.
"Hey, did you hook up with Shelley last night?" Logan asks his friend.
Duncan, who we are told is one of the most brilliant students in the school says: "Uh, she's a talker. She's a talker, you know. Turns out she has conflicted feelings towards her new stepmom and the colour scheme the woman's chosen for the family rec room - "
"I hate it when they talk," Logan says.
"Yeah, I know it." Good grief. I still hated Logan in this episode and comments like "I hate it when they talk" are just appalling.
Logan then makes it worse. He looks up and sees Troy and Veronica chatting with each other.
"Hey, have you noticed that the new kid in town has, uh, been all over your trailer-park ex?"
"Let it be, Logan," Duncan tells him, partly because he's more easygoing and partly because he's about to have an attack.
"Okay, nowhere man, you be the fool on the hill. See if I care," Logan replies. He looks up at Duncan and notices that he's turned quite pale and sweaty.
"Dude, you don't look so hot," he says, channelling Detestable Dick. Duncan drops his backpack on the ground and bolts to the bathroom while Logan back over at Veronica and Troy again.
Duncan goes to the bathroom, splashes water on his face and smiles spacily into the mirror, possibly at all the pwitty colours. Spots, does he see spots?
Logan is grinning to himself over one of the notebooks in Duncan's bag as he waits. He unhurriedly and openly puts it back into Duncan's bag when Duncan comes out.
"You okay?"
"Never better."
"Okay."
Logan hands Duncan his bag and gets his own backpack. He sees Veronica hurriedly dragging Justin into the girls' bathroom.
Logan laughs. "That girl is seriously whack."
Duncan shakes his head and they move on.
In this scene, we see that Logan continues to be fascinated by Veronica. I want to beat him up for his "I hate it when they talk comment" and his "trailer park ex" comment but Jason Dohring is so good. He makes it so easy to hate Logan. At this point, we still don't know Logan has layers.
I don't think I can agree with those guys at LoVe Shack that he secretly has feelings for Veronica that he has subliminated into hate. I know he is fixated or obsessed with her but I don't know why. I don't feel that it's love or affection .... maybe it's just attraction.
As to the "that girl is totally whack" comment that had so many LoVe supporters squealing in glee ..... errrr ... I don't see it. The smile on Logan's face is more of a: "That girl is nuts" rather than any form of positive emotion.
Although I don't agree with them, I do love the turn of phrase those guys at LoVe Shack used, particularly the bolded bit:
I dunno what the motivation, direction, etc. was for this scene, but those five seconds are just delicious for LoVe shippers everywhere searching for LoVe moments in the drought of the first half of the season.
Hee heee, "the drought of the first half of the season".
So true, funny how it seems ....
Pouring water on a drowning man?
Duncan, Logan and some generic 09er buddies are watching a lacrosse game from the bleachers.
"Go Pirates."
Logan gets his hip flask, taps Duncan with it and um .... lies down with his head on the legs of the 09er behind him. Sheesh, I know Jason Dohring appears to do some deliberately gay gestures but what was with this?
Anyway he says: "I thought your boy toy Troy was going to join us for Happy Hour this afternoon."
Then, his obsession with Veronica continuing, he asks: "You don't suppose that, uh, he got waylaid by Veronica, do you?"
Logan is about to take a drink but Duncan turns around and grabs the flask. Logan jumps to his feet and the guys glare at one another with a little bit of hostility. Logan looks a bit wary and uncertain but then Duncan raises his eyebrows and starts putting on a fake Chinese accent which made me groan. His impersonations are clearly as bad as his singing!!!
"Ooooh, Grasshopper too slow for Kung-Fu Master," he declares. "If you can take the flask out of my hand then you will be…"
Logan feigns that he's not going to play but then he suddenly lunges for the flask. Duncan holds it out of his reach. So you know I'm not biased, Jasoh Dohring looks kind of pudgy in this scene - something about his legs, back and butt. I just checked Television Without Pity and realise I'm not the only one who noticed this. A poster named depudor said:
Moving into shallow waters, I have another take on The Great Wardrobe Controversy. Please forgive me, because this is the only negative comment I will make about Jason's extraordinary physique, but he seems to have a rather large posterior, and there are actually a few shots where it's quite distracting. I think the long shirts and jackets are an attempt at camoflauge.
The two mess around while Dick Casablancas and another one of the generic 09ers move off screen to do something suitable to their intellect.
Duncan then decides that the bleachers mean that he should be singing "Summer loving" from Grease. He starts to sing, very badly and Logan laughs. Meanwhile, the generic 09er has done a backflip off the bleacher and landed unhurt on nearby matting.
In the distance, creepy, sleazy slimy Troy and Veronica are walking and talking. Veronica kisses him and I throw up. I wonder if Jerilee is going to scold me for being so vitriolic about Troy..... {I didn't hate Troy as much, in fact I kept thinking he was his twin brother. All I kept telling myself every time he came on was that he's not Ice Man from the X-Men movies.} When Duncan sees them kissing, although he doesn't throw up like me, his reaction is do a handstand over the bleacher. He lands on the mat but cracks his head on the ground.
Veronica breaks off the kiss (and I thank Duncan for sacrificing himself) and runs over, Troy following her. Logan runs to the edge and looks down just as Veronica gets to Duncan's side.
"You okay, man? What was that, a triple klutz?" Logan asks, laughing.
"Hey," Duncan says cheerfully. Duncan is bleeding and Logan tells him: "Hey Duncan, open your mouth. This'll help." He then proceeds to sprinkle its contents on Veronica who understandably looks unimpressed. She takes Duncan way for medical treatment.
As Veronica gets Duncan into the driver's seat he says: "And, I almost stuck the landing." Hee hee. That was funny. Nice to see that Logan isn't the only one who can make a good joke.
There is really nothing nice to say about Logan in this scene except that the early moments yet again signalled his fixation with Veronica.
Veronica does a voiceover: "You can live in the wreckage and pretend it's still the mansion you remember." Later at school, she sees Duncan approaching with Logan and asks him:
"Hey, how's your head?" She looks quite happy, almost as if she thinks they're friends again and I guess she's entitled given that she helped him out.
Zombie Duncan stares at her blankly and then answers: "It's better."
He walks away. Veronica and Logan don't look at one another but they do stare after Duncan with the same somewhat perplexed expressions on their faces.
I can't really read anything LoVe-significant into this although I tried :) My take is - they're both friends of Duncan, good friends and they both care about a friend. I guess what we can take away from it is that Logan is also a Good Friend so he can't be that bad. At this stage in the season, I was not yet convinced.
